I was lucky enough to see Paris Photo again this year. It’s a pretentious place, for sure, but there is some cool stuff. I think I may be finally “getting” Todd Hido.

🎬 “Colossal” (2017 - Nacho Vigalondo) is a quirky movie with very solid acting. Full of plot holes but the story is really good (and new afaict)

📚Cory Doctorow can be a bit shrill, but this is a very good summary of Piketty’s two tomes. I’m in the middle of the first one, and off to buy the second today. Very long slog, but such a vaccine against insta-punditry.

In the spirit of “more after, less before”: 📚finished reading the hydraulic emperor by Arkady Martine ( her 1st novel: “A memory called empire” just came out) - It’s all that I love in short stories - a complete world setup in 5 pages, and a quick punch to the gut at the end.

Netflix is weird. A search for “wings of desire” sparked by another conversation on m.b. brought me to a documentary on the Foo Fighters.

There is yet hope. A burrito place has opened about half a km away from my office. #mexicanfoodinparis

🎼 Lana del Rey’s latest album - its a bit too mellow for my taste. Those lyrics need a bit more oomph.

Thanks to @robinsloan, in the 20 minutes it took me to eat breakfast I bought two books and subscribed to 6 newsletters. That’s my daily commute sorted for a while. I also discovered that robots can’t recognize traffic lights and bridges (the Captcha thème du jour). Finally, my new get-rich-quick idea: translate all these amazing newsletters in French and become the next media darling and insta-pundit of the Parisian Rive Gauche.

Someone told me that the nice thing about turning 50 was that the white hair meant you didn’t have to prove yourself anymore.

Dammit.

There’s a definite analog vibe going on in our house these days. My wife’s “changing job” present is a turntable. Early 80’s hits galore!

We took our kids to Paris for a weekend of music and touristy things. Couldn’t miss the Seine cruise…
